Mandisa

I have so many things that I have been inspired to write about recently that I feel like I am going to explode. There was the whole immigration thing and John Kerry's idiotic statements that I posted on last Friday. Then I engaged in an interesting debate regarding Mandisa on LoLo's blog, one which I feel I must continue here. The comment section was way too confining for this rant. Finally, there is a subject that I intended to blog about today, but will hopefully get to tomorrow.

The premise of LoLo's post was that Mandisa is a "hater" and deserved to be voted off American Idol. I defended Mandisa.

I decided to take a look at the actual comments that she made, and her scandalous bio page on the Idol website, rather than just comment on the hearsay. Bottom line, I see absolutely nothing wrong with her comments or her actions. I will look at some of the more controversial items and comment accordingly.

From her bio:

Who is your AMERICAN IDOL?

"An author and speaker named Beth Moore. She inspires me to live more like Jesus and I want to do the same."

Beth Moore is an Evangelical Christian whose ministry primarily focuses on aiding and supporting women who desire to model their lives based on evangelical Christianity principals. She has preached on topics ranging from self-identity issues, drug/sexual addition and abuse, an evangelical Christian perspective on family life, marriage, homosexuality, and pre-martial sex.

Homosexuals consider Moore to be antigay because she believes that homosexuality is not inborn and can be overcome.

The truth of the matter is that there is presently no generally accepted scientific evidence that the homosexual inclination is inborn. There is also no evidence that there is not a genetic predisposition toward homosexuality in some people. In other words, it comes down to, "What do you believe?" Like me, Mandisa is a Christian, so I see absolutely nothing wrong with her saying that she is inspired by a Christian author like Beth Moore.

From The Advocate.com:

Would you be comfortable performing or singing at a gay event?

"I would not, no. "

Would it conflict with your religious beliefs?

"Based on what I believe, I'm not an advocate for [being gay], so it's nothing I would take part in. "

Do you remember when several artists banded together and chose not to perform at Sun City because of South Africa's apartheid policy? They were considered heroes because they chose not to perform in places where they did not agree with the South African way of life. Now I'm not comparing homosexuality to the heinous nature of apartheid, so don't start ripping me for that. I am comparing the fact that in each case, the each artist should have the right to choose venues where they want to perform. Bruce Springsteen and others thought that apartheid was wrong, so they stayed away from performing in venues where that was the law of the land. Mandisa believes that homosexuals are living morally corrupt lives, so she has every right to not perform in gay venues. In fact, she doesn't even say that she wouldn't perform there, only that she wouldn't feel comfortable performing there.

Before you sang the Mary, Mary gospel song “Wanna Praise You,” you mentioned that people's various addictions and lifestyles are not as strong as God. Were you speaking of gay people?

"No, no. That song was a very personal testimony for me. I've been dealing with an addiction to food for most of my life. I've been living in a lifestyle of pure indulgence, giving in to every single desire that I've had as far as what I've put into my body. So when I was speaking that, I was strictly speaking of how the Lord has helped me to overcome my personal struggle and I was just saying if God can do it for me—and a lot of other people face many different things out there—I was trying to be a testimony that he can do it for anybody. "

Do you see just how slanted this interview is? There is nothing stated or implied in her statement prior to singing the song that would lead anyone, other than a gay and lesbian magazine, to jump to the conclusion that the comments were about homosexuals. Absolutely nothing. They are like the 16 year-old girl in high school that thinks everyone is talking about her all the time. Get over yourselves already!

Bottom line is that Mandisa can perform or not perform anywhere that she sees fit. It's her choice, and if she doesn't want to perform in a gay nightclub, then I support her. Personally, I don't like it when Jewish artists like Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond sell Christmas albums because they are trying to profit from the birth of a saviour in whom they do not believe. Does that make me a hater?

***For the record, this is my 50th post. (As if that has any significance.)

Comments:
I find it hard to believe that all publications are not agenda driven. The advocate is very honest about its readership and asked her questions that they felt were the kind of questions a homosexual person would want answers to.

You are right, Mandisa has every right to play or not play whatever venue she wants. The bottom line however is that she was in a competition and was looking for the public's support and the public apparently didn't agree with her.

Also, she didn't just say she wouldn't feel comfortable there, she said "Based on what I believe, I'm not an advocate for [being gay', so it's nothing I would take part in."
To me that says she would not play there.

Imagine (although it is difficult) that a muslim girl was on American Idol and she discussed her belief system and was very honest about her relationship with God. What would happened if she discussed who SHE felt didn't feel she should have to play in front of, based on what she believed? How long would he last?

My point is that Mandisa chose to make her religion a major part of what the public saw of her, and anyone who takes that risk is going to have to deal with the fact that not everyone is going to agree with her.

Even being the Jesus freako that she is... I LOVE Mandisa!;) She ROCKED!!

It's interesting how a sexual orientation has become a political orientation. And how religious beliefs have become political ones. Gays and the religious community have more in common than they know.

KK - For Pete's sake the publications name is The Advocate! Their mission is to not only serve the gay community, but promote their lifestyle as being normal when it is very clearly deviant from the mainstream.

Also, upon further review of the question and her comments, I originally missed that she was actually asked if she would feel comfotable performing at a gay event, not a venue. Now what kind of gay events with music are there? Unless you count the Lillith Fair tour (just kidding), I can only think of one: A "We're here, we're queer, get used to it" rally. If her beliefs conflict with telling everyone that being gay is normal, then of course she wouldn't want to perform at an event promoting just that idea.

I agree that she did make her faith an issue, and suffered as a result. I don't have an issue with that, but I do have an issue with her being called a hater. It's just not right.

NG - I honestly have never even watched Idol. I just felt bad for this girl.

Bill - Well stated. Everything goes hand in hand. Politics effects policy, and policy effects our lives. It is only natural that things that are important to us like who we are and what we believe, ie "our lives", would make us want to be part of the political process.

Their mission is to not only serve the gay community, but promote their lifestyle as being normal when it is very clearly deviant from the mainstream.

Did you really just write that? It sickens me that people actually think this way, and not only think this way, but proclaim it from a soapbox. You have a right to your opinion Flounder, but your opinion makes me ill.

Well flounder I am with you. I feel like we are all entitled to our own beliefs and should not be
pursucuted for them.
Of course If you believe in and read your bible you know that those of us who are christian will be in the end.

I haven't been following AI very closely. I did watch it last night.

Brooke - The latest studies indicate that only 2% of the population is gay. Deviant is defined as Differing from a norm or from the accepted standards of a society. If 98% of the population is heterosexual (the norm), what would you call the 2% that is homosexual?

I'm tired of everyone being so PC, and I just refuse to be that way. I've said it before, they are not "undocumented workers", they are illegal aliens. It is not "intelligent design", it's Creationism. Etc, etc....

Like it or not, the homosexual lifestyle is a deviant lifestyle. That doesn't make them bad people or unworthy of love and respect, it just makes them different that 98% of us. That is all I was trying to say.

Twisted - In Luke 21:12, Christ warns that "they shall lay their hands on you and persecute you... for My name's sake." Living out your faith does come with a warning.

Sonya - I never watch that show, but this issue is burning me up.

Watch out, Flounder. You are showing us your intellectual (however you spell it) side and this could damage your frat boy reputation you have with all of us. LOL!

Sonya - Don't worry, I am sure that I will come up with something completely juvenile for everyone's amusement soon.

Let's have a toga party!

It's like it's a bad thing to be a Christian in today's world. It's almost safer to go around in public an proclaim you are a Felon than it is to say you are a Christian. Everybody wants to make a big deal out of everything. Jesus is my homeboy and if you don't like it you and can take that up with Him not me.

This is funny so I will cut and paste it here for your reading enjoyment:

I didn't remove you from my blogroll. Several people are missing for some reason. You should know by now that I'm not the type to drop someone simply because I disagree with their views. So fuck you. And I'm eating a sub right now. So fuck you again.

Rollies on you this summer.

"KK - For Pete's sake the publications name is The Advocate! Their mission is to not only serve the gay community, but promote their lifestyle as being normal when it is very clearly deviant from the mainstream."

I don't see the problem. The publication is honest about it's intention and provides the reader with the understanding of the viewpoint the publication is taking.

Groups deprived of basic rights need an advocate so the title is appropriate.
If Mandisa has such a problem with the gay community, she didn't have to do an interview with them.
There are many other music festivals geared towards the gay community other then gay pride parades and considering Mandisa's opinion of them, chances are they wouldn't invite her.
So no worries, she won't 'catch gay'.

Congrats on the 50th post!

Mel - I am ALWAYS up for a toga party.

BV - She has not "BEEN AROUND" - She is a "PREVIOUSLY-ENJOYED COMPANION That is some funny shit!

Brooke - You're a twat. A sub-eating, child-educating twat. And I'll pick up the rocks as long as when we are good and liquored up, you will walk over and cry with me in front of Maloney's condo complex.

KK - We certainly agree on a couple of things here. I agree that groups deprived of basic rights do, in fact, need an advocate though I wonder if they sometimes do more harm than good.

And exactly why was she doing an interview with them in the first place? I understand why they would request an interview considering the bio on the Idol web page, but she should have refused it.

CB - Thanks honey!

Sorry it took me so long to get here.........

Good points
